University of York Technical Theatre Society

Here, we have a list of links to equipment manufacturers used by the society, lighting and sound guides and video tutorials to get you started and help you find out more about theatre tech.

Equipment Manufacturers

ETC - Manufacturer of a wide range of products including EOS control desks, dimmers and Source Four lighting fixtures. We use the ETCNomad software as our primary lighting controller. An offline simulator of the software is available here.

Zero 88 - Makes control desks and dimmers. The tech society makes use of Zero 88 dimming.

Chamsys MagicQ - Specialise in control desks for live music events, and the society may use MagicQ software as an alternative lighting controller for concerts. MagicQ software is free to download from their website, however you will need either a USB to DMX interface or Art-Net/sACN node to be able to control a lighting rig.

Philips Entertainment Lighting - Entailing brands such as Strand, one of the first major lighting companies, most of our generic lighting fixtures are from the Philips Entertainment Range.

Allen & Heath - For analogue and digital audio mixing desks.

DramaSoc - DramaSoc put on 2 plays every week in their on-campus venue, the Drama Barn. They are always looking for new technicians.

University of York Department of Theatre, Film and Television - If you are thinking about studying at UoY and are interested in theatre tech, the TFTV department offers courses in Writing, Directing & Performance, and Film & TV production. Both include plenty of tech!
